I had no luck even getting the page to load, let alone go through the reservation process.

After 23 minutes of busy signals I got through to the reservation line at 12:23 EST and was put on hold - after 10 minutes the recorded voice told me to hit 1, which I did, which sent me to a voicemail line, so I hit * then 0 to get an operator who kindly put me back to the hotel reservation line. After another 5-6 minutes on hold I reached Juliet who was able to grab me a room at the Marriott Marina - I love her.

really, really hate the reservation "system" (online AND phone). It's like trying to get tickets to Bon Jovi at Ticketmaster in 1996 - it take forever, and even if you succeed, all you have to show for it are Bon Jovi tickets.

First reservation got dropped because of server issues, then the rest were all sold out. This sucks.

I got a room - at the marriot - here's my experience - and the key was NEVER hitting refresh/reload just waiting a VERY LONG time for pages to load. Terrible scripting.

9:00 : try logging on, page won't load - a friend on a separate connection starts to try to get through - and i do not hit refresh on original attempt

9:08 Original connection finally loads, second attempt still not loading

9:10 Individual Reservation page finally loads. Click on see what's available.

9:13 Hotel pages comes up. Click on Book It! for Marriot.

Friends Reservation finally loads.

9:16 credit card pop up loads, enter info

9:22 Credit card accepted, told to close window

9:24 nothing happening on main page. click on ambiguous "Browser 3.0" OK button.

Friend enters credit info on credit card pop-up for his reservation.

9:28 "Your Reservation Not Done Yet" page loads. I curse. Check off meaningless legal check boxes ("I accept rates" "I accept deposit" neither of which have any true legal standing...but that's a story for a consumer rights blog)Then confirm. New pages starts trying to load.

Friend told credit card accepted. Closes window, nothing happens . clicks "ok" button.

9:38 "You reservation is accepted" page finally loads. I print the confirmation page. Then I attempt to email it to myself.

Friend still waiting for confirm page to load.

9:42 Their servers crash.

9:46: They back online. I am now able to send res. confirmation email. Friend no longer in cue, all friday and sat nights booked.

Come to blog to see comments.

So if you have absurd faith, and are willing to wait 10 minutes for a page to load (Hey! It's 1996!) the system "works." one transaction - 40 minutes.

SO where are the maps to hotels? Why isn't there a list showing what hotels are available now LIVE, instead of making you pick one hotel only to hang for 20 minutes. Why is it that twice I had a room at Marriott Marina but because they were sold out friday night I cannot book the other 3?? WTF? Then there is no recourse, you can't click continue , you can't click back, you CANT click contact! I was left hanging so many times. This website design is BAD! You need to prepare for this onslaught and have better & more servers just for today!
At least in years past, you could at least attempt to make a reservation, today has been the worst ever. Things should be improving not getting worst!

And it just happened to me again for a third time. This is beyond irritating and just shows a lack of basic competence.

And, oh, I finally got the phone to ring through and NO ONE PICKED UP.

Asshats.

The web process just seems unnecessarily difficult and convoluted. I second whoever suggested a more stripped-down design for faster load times.

@Vutt: I managed to snag a room using the website about an hour after my first attempt. A friend was trying the phone route and I was using the site. I had the same problem that everyone else ran into; clicking "book it", then having the site crash.

1 HOUR, 30 something minutes of dialing, clicking, waiting, and calling. Yeah, NO room for me. You enter all your info, confirm, and CRASH. Lost. All is LOST.
The web booking just bites. Phones are always busy. You think they would be prepared for the amount of people, by uping the bandwidth and site, and having a bigger phone bank service handling the calls. POOR POOR PLANNING as usual. Oh well, perhaps next year I will get to stay at COMIC-CON prices.

I had 6 people trying and no one got through online or on the phone. I'm beginning to get the sense that Comic con feels they don't need to fix a very broken process because they don't have to. The attendees will find a way to get there no matter what right? Well, I think not... this will be my last year attending sdcc after many years of going unless something is changed for next year.

Why should I even bother pre-registering for an event I don't know if I can attend thanks to the horrendous housing situation?

Wow, finally got a reservation on the phone. Give up on the web site, it sucks. Took us over an hour but finally success. You would think with a major event like this they could hire some competent computer staff.

Terrible. Phone busy for over an hour. Can not get thru on the internet and when one does get a glimmer of hope with Book It, I get kicked out.

In general this whole process has been a pain (I know I'm echoing the comments of others). As a (hopeful) first time attendend, I wish there was a better way to get an idea of SD's landscape. Some people mentioned B&B's on trolley lines and so on which would be good to know.

Next year, if in SD again, can you post hotels by Shuttle, On Trolley routes, etc? Even if they are not in the SD system, knowing a hotel I could have booked on public transit would have been nice.

I've been stuck at the 'please wait processing your registration' for 60mins now. I'm a bit worried that I'm going to find out I'm SOL when it finally does get processed.

Once again incompetent staff and moronic site errors. After over an hour of trying both the phone and internet site and getting as far as going to click the confirmation button TWICE, I got an error message twice and was told to call. Um, WTF? Isn't that what I've been trying to do for an hour? Idiots.

Maybe a separate way to book for industry? Might help. 'Cause I have to go for work.

ARGH! Same frustrating experience as everyone else. Got all the way to the screen to enter my credit card information, entered it, then got a message saying all my selections were lost and I had to try again. My husband and I have both been trying for the last hour to get through on the site and over the phone and nothing.

Fail.

I have been calling for the last hour and line busy. I also tried the interent and got as far as book it. Then nothing for a while and got an error page. This is suppose to be the big event. Why are they not support or servers to handle this volume of calls and internet users. Very upset about this. Will keep trying for 45 mins then I give up.

They really upgraded this year by putting a blog up so everyone can say how horrible the service is. Why not instead get a new booking company for the hotels?

Very good post by Kelson. I too noticed the JavaScript links required you to wait for the entire page to load... which was S L O W due to the server overload. I also noticed many of the other points Kelson brings up about the design and implementation of the TPHousing website. A separate pop-up window to enter your CC info? Are TPHousings programmers looking for ways to hit the server harder? A message alerting you that you "may not be able to enter your CC info securely?" WTF? This is basic HTML 101 stuff that the vendor comic-con is using for hotel reservations SHOULD be able to get right. Instead TPHousing blunders their way through another year reaping profits and screwing over fans, talent, and vendors world wide. Poor customer service should not be rewarded.

By the way, did anyone actually get a room?

What a total joke... AGAIN.

Has ANYBODY been able to successfully make a reservation on the web site?

I agree. Speed dialing 2 different numbers for an hour straight AND trying the website - nothing.

You guys need to go to a lottery system or find a new company. :-(

Vic

I had a great room also and the site went dead.
Whats the deal!
will somebody at comic con please help us fans.

This is completely absurd. I started at 9am on the dot when reservations were available and the tphousing server was already down. I sat redialing for an hour while trying to refresh over and over until I just gave up. This is straight up garbage, there are not enough hotels and staff available to host Comic Con anymore in San Diego. Ive been going to con for the past 17 years, and I hate to say it but I think it is time to move somewhere else to accomadate the growing number of people that attend every year. This is pretty awful.

1 hour later online... I got a room, entered credit card information, then got "page not available." How can I verify whether or not my credit card went through and my reservation is valid?

great. got to the confirm page...hit confirm...no response for 15+ min. NOW WHAT? Says "DO NOT MAKE ANOTHER RESERVATION, CALL US"

Ya right.

Once again the lack of service and support, crashes the system!
This system sucks.

Allright, I actually got asked for credit card info, entered it, was told it was accepted, and nothing's happening. The page says "done". The only thing for me to do now is enter it again.

These guys have put form over function - there's nothing faster than an image-free website for getting this sort of thing done, plus your servers don't have to serve out as much, and get overwhelmed.

The site wastes bandwith it doesn't have. Awful.
