I'm always checking up on these board's and saw Joe's post about places to eat So I thought I would post a few places to enjoy while staying in San Diego. I live in LA and have been enjoying the Con for 8 years now and I also own a food company that service's all of southern CA(which I to travel to SD once a month or so).
So getting back to your questions:
Quick cheap breakfast/lunch
For breakfast I have always just eat the hotel breakfast bar(since I wake up late 9 A.M or later) since I know i'll be eating lunch soon.
Lunch you have a lot of choices.
As Bill posted, Tin Fish is a great place to go. They are fast and ok priced, plus have a good fish n' chips (they used to use cod, but since the price is high they may have changed to pollock). They also added a bar a few years back.
The Mall also has a few good quick places. They have many fast food places there like La Salsa grill.
Shocking enough Ralph's makes good hot and cold lunches and one of the shuttle's drops you in front of their store.
Sit down relaxed dinner
The Yard House is always a great place.
The stipclub(not that type) is a great steak house and fun if you have a group of people. You have to cook your own steak and it's always a good time.
Then the must place I eat at every year(some times twice) is The Field. It's an Irish Pub with GREAT FOOD. It's very very heavy food so be carful your first time. It is a pub too so it does get crazy at night.
If your by the Hotel circle there is a steak house that is pretty good too. Havn't been around there for four years so I don't know the name off hand.
Lively bar
The Field :)
Dick's Last resort...OMG! It is another MUST GO! They have good food, cold drinks and they have a great time messing with you. trust me, you'll enjoy it.
The Shout House is a dueling pianos bar. If you have never been to that type of bar, it's another must.
There is also a cigar club/bar that I went to a few times, but can't recall the name of it.
There are many, many, many places to enjoy and eat in San Diego. The ones I named are ones that I enjoy the most, but you can find almost any type/style of food within 10miles. Gaslamp is a fun and different place at night! I hope I help a little and didnt mispell too much.

BTW, the Westin San Diego Hotel also has complimentary airport transportation for those attendees staying there. There is courtesy phone in the baggage claim area that will call the shuttle (Just confirmed this with the Westin SD front desk. I believe they do charge a fee for guests departing for the airport after checkout).
Eats-wise, I usually get lunch at Tin Fish that's right across from the Convention Center (can get very crowded at times).

I just got off the phone with the Westin San Diego and confirmed my reservation. However, since they didn't have my CC number on file, my reservation was not guaranteed for late arrivals after 4PM. Not one to tempt fate (especially with todays air travel woes), I had that fixed right away.
It might be a good idea for people to double check to see if their reservations are guaranteed for late arrival as well, since the last thing any of us wants is to have our rooms given away due to things out of our control...

I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations as far as places to eat around the convention center/downtown area. Looking for places that cover:
Quick cheap breakfast/lunch
Sit down relaxed dinner
Lively bar
Any help from the veterans? :)

I just wanted to let the board know that some hotels do not charge a deposit until the day of check in. I called travel planners and they provided me with my hotel reservation number. I contacted the hotel and everything was in order.

Debbie, I got an answer from the Westin SD today and there was no problem at all, it appears that the problem is that TravelPlanners sucks, but that's nothing new

mj and debbie-same problem with the marriott. i called the hotel and they have my reservation but it doesn't exist on the tp website. i am assuming that tp is in the process of "turning over" the reservations and they're sort of ... lost in the ether, so to speak.

Hi, I'm not really sure who to report this to, but it looks like there's an overlap on the Saturday Schedule. Windstorm Brewing is from 6:30 to 7:30 in Room 8. But then The CBLDF Benefit Auction is listed from 7:00 to 9:00 in Room 8 as well.

Hi! I read on COmic-Con's webiste that the Marriott is the official headquarters for Comic-Con and that the Hospital Suite is located there? Does anyone know what goes on at the Hospitality Suite at the Marriott? Can anyone go to this?
Thank you!!!

I've got exactly the same problem Debbie has, but with the Westin San Diego.
Posted by: mj | July 13, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Debbie, you need to call Travel Planners first thing Monday morning (they are closed on weekends). I don't want to alarm you but it sounds like they lost your reservation, and you might not have a room when you get to San Diego. Since you have a printout (or email) confirmation from TP, i would insist that if this is indeed the case that they find EQUIVALENT or better accomodation for your party immediately. Please keep us advised of your situation so that we may help you better.

Can anyone tell me how to check my reservation at the Westin. I made the reservation through Travel Planners, and received a confirmation number, however we have not been charged for our first night. When I go to the Travel Planners page it doesn't recognize our confirmation number. I've also called the Westin and they have knowledge of a reservation. Also they changed their name from Westin Horton Plaza to Westin Gaslamp District. What a pain! HELP

Kathy - Have you checked your reservation on the TP website? My hotel reservation number showed up last Thursday when I checked.

Does anyone know when the hotel confirmation numbers will be available? I need to contact the hotel directly about my reservation and I only have travel planners reservation number. My original confirmation said it would be ready about 2 weeks ahead. Thanks for any info you can provide.

There're Westin and Holiday Inn on the Bay openings right now...
Posted by: Shirley | July 11, 2008 at 09:11 AM
Looks like a lot of people dumped rooms this week - right now there is availability at a lot of hotels. Depending if you need just the weekend or the whole week you can get anything from the Doubletree, to the Sheraton.

Just a heads up for anyone looking for a longer reservation. I am letting go of one of my king suites at the Hampton Inn San Diego - Downtown today. I made the reservation directly through their site and you have to stay through Sunday night. It's through the Hilton website I believe. Wanted to give someone who's looking for something the chance to pick it up.

Right now SAG has NOT called for a work stoppage so while there is a chance they could strike it has not been authorized by the union yet. You can always get more info at http://www.sag.org.
As of now, SAG is supposed to be providing the AMPTP their response to their last-minute proposal made on June 30th today so we'll see if that means they'll remain at the negotiating table. As long as they are still in bargaining, you won't see a strike. If the bargaining breaks down, then you'll probably see something more develop. Still, check the SAG site for the latest since if they authorize a strike you'll likely see it there first.

it keeps leaving the "1" off at the end, so add it to your browser to see the story.

SDCC Vet,
I simply was asking if there was any truth to the story, NOT stating fact as your post seemed to infer. Here is the link, again.

Question: Which of the three following hotels would you choose? Holiday Inn on the Bay, Hampton Inn Downtown or Doubletree Downtown? I couldn't get a hotel and have friends who are kind enough to offer floor/sofa space but I've never stayed at any of these...
Posted by: Sarasa | July 01, 2008 at 05:27 PM
First off your link doesn't work.
There is a possibility that this might happen. I don't think its as bad as you're making out to be.
Most of the actors don't want to strike as they are still smarting from the lack of work during the writers strike. Most of SAG's membership is not high paid mega stars, but extras, bit role actors and the like who were hurt much more by the last strike than the million dollar ones. Basically what it boils down to is whether the newer actors union, AFTRA will ratify the agreement they reached with the studios. SAG has stated that if AFTRA ratifies they will reopen negotiations.AFTRA is likely to ratify. I'm not overly worried.

I just read on a website that seems to know a lot about the SDCC, that because of the impending actors strike, there may not be many, if any actors at the convention...
Any truths to this?
